Applied Mathematics Course from Kvanta and Mathematicats

The “Kvanta” project team, together with the School of Applied Mathematics “Matematykotyky,” is launching a free mini-course in applied mathematics!

Five lectures — from precise calculations to artificial intelligence — will show how mathematics works in the real world. The first session will take place on April 21, so make sure to register soon!

About the Lecturer

The course is taught by Ruslan Olhovych — a mathematician (graduate of KhNURE), founder of the “Matematykotyky” school, and an experienced educator. Ruslan is one of the most engaging speakers of the Kvanta.STEM project, known for explaining complex concepts in a simple and enthusiastic way.

Course Program

Lesson 1. Quantitative approach. This lecture demonstrates the importance of a broad mathematical background, as well as approximate methods for solving problems and when they can be more useful than exact solutions.

Lesson 2. Qualitative approach. Moving away from strictly quantitative modeling of real processes and exploring a new approach — qualitative — through examples such as modeling economic demand and population dynamics.

Lesson 3. Heuristic approach. In this session, we will explore heuristic algorithms — methods that find good (though not necessarily optimal) solutions through ideas and approximations — using examples like the ant colony algorithm and the least squares method.

Lesson 4. Probabilistic and statistical approach. Fundamentals of probability theory and statistics: how information is extracted from data and how it is used in science and technology.

Lesson 5. Artificial Intelligence. Machine learning, regression, classification, recommendation systems — and how mathematicians even use AI in proving theorems.
