According to the regulations of the IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad), the leaders of the countries arrive 3-4 days before the official opening to participate in the jury. Participants must arrive on the eve of the opening. But if the IMO is held far from Europe, then most teams from Europe arrive in the country of the Olympiad in the same way in 3-4 days in order to have time to acclimatize – to the time zone, to the temperature and time of year, to food, water, etc. Wherever there is a desire to help their participants perform as best they can. Powerful countries from other continents do the same.
Since 2013, when the Olympiad was held in Colombia, we were given permission to travel the same way in advance. This did not increase public spending, as philanthropists and/or participants paid for these extradited ones. It was just necessary to knit tickets for the same flight 3-4 days earlier. This was the case in 2014 (South Africa), 2015 (Thailand) and 2016 (Hong Kong). And only this year we received a refusal. And not just rejection, but also an interesting route for travel.
As for buying tickets for an earlier period, an explanation is yet to be made. Audit agencies have often seen "corruption" in the fact that the team bought tickets not exactly for the specified period. The interests of participants, managers, and in general our country were not taken into account by them. It is very, very unfortunate that we are so indifferent to the success of Ukraine controlling the authorities, but "we have what we have…". Thus, despite our request (and not only ours), we did not go to the meeting.
And now about more interesting things. Here are the tickets our participants purchased.

I understand what saving and saving money is. But to force our best young mathematicians without the ability to acclimatize and simply without the opportunity to rest a couple of days on the spot, to be on the road first almost 6 hours to Dubai, then more than 10 hours at the airport (all night), after which another 14 hours in the air is a mockery. What result can you count on after that? Any medal will already be a huge achievement. I believe that such a "journey" can be wasted a whole year of fruitful preparation for the IMO. The road home is just as impressive, but it is no longer so fundamental. Savings on a normal route will be due to the loss of precious awards of participants and the team place of our country. Is it worth it?
I understand that nothing can be changed now. But we must pay attention to these problems and issues. It is necessary for the next years for all our participants in all international Olympiads (for mathematicians it will be 3 consecutive years of IMO in Europe), which will not pass to Europe, to provide for the possibility of an earlier departure and stay for several days for acclimatization.
Glory to Ukraine!
