Ukraine national team performance at the 55th International Olympiad

Some theses about the performance of the Ukrainian national team at the 55th International Olympiad in Mathematics in 2014 on hot tracks without in-depth analysis…

July 3-13, 2014, Cape Town, South Africa

To get to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), participants from Ukraine undergo a number of tests throughout the year. This year, the autumn selection of Ukrainian schoolchildren for international competitions was added to all these tests, where 10 of the best 45 participants were selected. With them, some additional work was carried out to prepare for the performance at the IMO, although it was possible to implement it not in full, as a result of tragic events in our country.

But the small thing that succeeded, as well as the selection of the best, was surprisingly successful. Our girls won the European Olympiad among girls, and all 6 of our representatives of Ukraine at the IMO were among the previously selected 10.

The team of Ukraine, which participated in the 55th IMO in South Africa, included 6 participants – eleventh graders Evgeniy Diomidov (Kyiv), Vadim Kalashnikov (Kharkiv) and Nazariy Palko (Lviv), as well as tenth-graders Sofia Dubova (Kharkiv), Natalia Khotyantseva (Kyiv) and Denis Smirnov (Kharkiv).

Now a little about the results. In general, all the formal details about the number of participants and countries, the results of each and in general of each country, the solution of each problem, etc. can be found on the official website of the IMO:

Here we will touch on the performance of our participants a little.

Regarding the features of everyone's performance.

Eugene just pleasantly surprised everyone, if not to say – impressed. It is a pity that he was able to solve the last task at full-time immediately after the Olympiad, otherwise he would have joined the absolute winners of the Olympiad.
Vadim on the first day impressed quite unpleasantly, but on the second day with his impeccable performance showed his true level and joined the famous group of two-time IMO gold winners from Ukraine.
Natalia, Nazariy and Denys fully met our expectations, but a little due to lack of experience did not get to gold. They needed to score only 1 point…, unfortunately for tasks 3 and 6 of the assessment scheme were such that even to score 1 point it was necessary to get significant promotions. But their impeccable solution to all other problems causes great respect. Since two of them are students of the 10th grade, we hope that they will learn and get points on not fully solved problems.
Sofia has not reached her true level a little, but her performances throughout the year confirm that this is only an unfortunate accident. All her main achievements are still ahead.

It is very, very unfortunate that this year 4 out of 6 of our participants stopped clearly under the line of a higher grade medal. If the jours lowered the boundaries by another 1 point for each position, then our country would have a result of 5 gold and 1 silver award… In fact, the limits of medals that had to be fed strictly in accordance with the regulations had higher limits – gold for 30 points, silver for 23 and bronze for 17. But the jury in recent years began to issue, more precisely, to vote for a lower limit. Leading countries are against this, but their vast minority… In fairness, it should be said that at one time This approach helped Ukraine a lot. In Kazakhstan in 2010, our participants scored 29+21+21+16+15+15 points. The exact limits of the medals were as follows – for gold 28, silver 22 and bronze 16 points. Thus, our team would receive 1 gold and 3 bronzes and 2 participants without a medal. After lowering the boundaries by 1 point in all positions, our achievements became an order of magnitude better. 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Probably this year we gave this debt and in the future our participants will stop over the line.

As always, our delegation was quite powerful. In addition to the participants, it included representative of IITZO Andrey Pankov, as well as teachers and graduates of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv – Bogdan Rublev, Andrey Aikushin, Alexey Klumman and Vitaliy Lishunov.

I want to thank Andriy Akushyn and especially Andriy Pankov, who made the stay of our participants in South Africa unforgettable, but they can tell about it themselves, since the program of stay of other members of the delegation was more working. Only on the last day, instead of the planned excursion to the center of Cape Town, we went to the Cape of Good Hope. There was also a short trip to the local park, and the rest of the time we spent in work and did not feel all the attractiveness of South Africa…

Now about the overall result of our team. It proved to be very successful, Ukraine repeated its best achievement in the team standings, taking the 6th place. If we consider Russia to be an Asian country, as it is in terms of territory, then we are the first in Europe! And significantly ahead of other European countries.

As you can see, we have shown a weak result on the most difficult tasks. We still need to work on this so that our participants understand that their knowledge, talent and training are enough to solve such problems. But this is not the first time that we have had problems with problems 1 and 4, and have solved the problems 2 and 5 very well. Perhaps it also helped that both of these tasks were combinatorial, and at the team meeting before the IMO, the lecturer Andriy Havryliuk, invited from Moscow, paid a lot of attention to combinatorial problems. I want to express on my behalf and from the team gratitude to Andriy for his work and help.

I would like to thank the parents and families of our mathematicians, who have carried the full burden of loads and are the direct founders of these victories.

We thank the teachers and leaders of the clubs who fruitfully prepared the participants for the highest achievements.

We thank the Ministry of Education and Science, which in such difficult times in Ukraine, invented funds for our full participation in the IMO. Children managed to adapt normally to African winter conditions, see Cape Town and perform well.

I definitely want to thank The Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the UFML, who constantly responded and helped to hold a number of events on their squares during the year.

Also, many thanks to our benefactors, without the help of which we would not be able to implement most of our ideas. As you can see, both your help and our efforts were not in vain, and therefore we look forward to further cooperation.

Oblozhka-2 Ukraine national team performance at the 55th International Olympiad

Thank you to all those who are not indifferent and interested.

I hope that other members of our delegation, parents, teachers will also share their impressions of participation in IMO-2014.

Soon we will present the conditions of problems, as well as their solution, both official and some solutions from our participants, some of which turned out to be much better than the author's ones.

Similarly, soon we will publish our plans for the next academic year, as well as some changes to the rules and principles of their implementation.

GLORY TO UKRAINE!!!
GLORY TO THE HEROES!!!
